Biedermeier Picture Frame Egg and Dart, Austria circa 1840

Large and impressive Egg and Dart Biedermeier Frame from Vienna/ Austria, out of the early Biedermeier period around 1815-1820. Comprised of an overlapping spruce wood substructure, this gorgeous frame was veneered with a thick walnut wood. The frame’s stunning decoration consists of a large band of carved "egg and dart" motifs, also called bull’s or ox eye, along two highly decorative inner bands. These are covered with gold leaf and enchants by its great antique patina. The "Bolus" is visible through the patina ("Bolus" refers to the shiny red primer paint used in the gold leaf technique).
